Essential Tips on How to Save Money for Travel

When financial shortage comes between you and your travel dreams, ponder over how to save money for travel.

Flexibility as well as being realistic while planning a trip will teach one how to save money for a trip. Planning in advance is a significant tip on how to save money for travel as it provides enough time to research a place and the related expenditure.

Here are a few essential tips on how to save money for travel

Intelligent Selection of Travel Destination:

One needs to have absolute clarity on her income vs expenditure to decide on the destination of travel. For example, with a particular amount of money from India, a trip to Cambodia would be far more comfortable than one to Europe. Even planning a trip to Southern Europe with a particular amount of money from India is smoother than that to Northern Europe with the same amount. Expenditures vary at different places.

Depending on the money one can spend, the destination needs to be finalized.

Flexibility:

Flexibility while booking tickets or stays for a vacation teaches how to save money for a trip.  One has to be open to taking advantage of prices and offers.

“A trip during off-season is generally affordable”

Check price comparing websites to pick your flight dates and to book your stay. Taking advantage of lower prices and off seasons is a major tip on how to save for travel.

Often travelling overnight reduces expenditure on stays.

Flying on weekdays gives pocket friendly rates over flying on weekends. This is also a tip on how to save money on international flights.

Savings Account dedicated to Travel:

Open a separate account other than your regular ‘Savings account’, specifically to fund travel. One may opt for Recurring Deposits, where every month a specific amount is automatically kept aside for the desired or selected duration (minimum of 6 months), summing up to a good amount of money saved for travel, at maturity.

Piggy Banks are definitely not back dated. Saving a small portion each day is another suggestion for how to save for travel.

Learn to live with less:

 Expenditure Analysis and Corrective Measures:

Track daily expenses and honestly analyse spends on unnecessary junks and modify buying habits.

Have a check on impulse buying. Planning your requirements before you go shopping is a suggestion for how to save money for travel.

Today when every impulse purchase is just a click away, getting rid of this habit of using money as a distraction or not getting trapped in retail tricks of ‘Good deals’ is not an easy task. Do reward yourself at times and keep aside a portion of the money saved from curbing retail therapy into your travel fund.

Replacing is way better than hoarding. For example, discard an old shirt when you buy a new shirt. This prevents spending up extra and one tends to buy only what is necessary.

Give up expensive habits:

Reduce eating out, cook at home and carry lunch boxes to work. Meal planning and grocery planning work best.

Avoid clubbing. Trust me, celebrations at home are fun too.

Avoid fancy bars and lounges for grabbing a drink.  As it is liquors are expensive.

Quit smoking, curtail drinking.

The easiest but effective tip on how to save money for a trip is to customize cable TV channel and mobile phone data packages according to your needs.

Cancel unused memberships (Gyms/spas/lounges) or pool in for online streaming entertainments to bring down unnecessary expenses. Borrow reading materials online or from friends or libraries for sometimes.

Reduce car usage. Use pool cars/shuttles or any other public transport on some days to curb daily expenses.

Tips to save while on a trip:

While estimating a budget for a trip, consider the ways in which one can save while on a trip:

Weighing one’s luggage carefully and carrying food from outside the airport (ideally from home), are also small but significant ideas for how to save money on international flights. Avoid purchasing (food) from airports and their lounges.

Travel in bunch to share the expenses.

Eat like the locals to know a place better and definitely to save money on the trip. Don’t be ashamed to eat enough at meals complementary at the hotels. Spend less on food while on the go.

In most developed countries one can drink tap water. Yet ask the locals, be sure and don’t spend on water bottles.

Locate free refreshment rooms or use them at the cafeterias and eateries when on the go.

Use public transport if you are a soulful solo traveler. This also enables one to connect to locals. You may opt for hostels, dorms or home stays.

If you ask me, ‘how to save for travel?’ I would say,’ Keep your life simple and stay motivated’. It doesn’t take a genius to scrutinize and calculate on where and how to adjust. Focus on how to save for travel.

An additional tip is to avoid financially irresponsible people. You must not let peer pressure of having designer clothing and accessories, expensive cocktails and the latest electronic gadgets ruin your determination. Be careful not to splurge at the spur of the moment.

Start now and implement these tips and tricks on how to save for travel consistently, to turn your far-flung travel fantasies into reality.

Wish you a happy journey.

  • Thanks for these great tips on how to travel more cheaply. We all like a bargain don’t we? We like to travel in the off season or at least the edges of it so that we get better value. The double-bonus is that it’s usually less crowded too.

‘Bargain’, reminds me of an incident…I have also experienced 20% discount on booking a trip to Delphi from Athens, on agreeing to pay in cash. So we should try out every opportunity to bargain.

  • I really take time to save up for my travels, so that I don’t feel the expenses, as much as I should. My sisters and I always dedicate a savings acoount for our trips, so we can put money in, every month. That way, we hardly feel the weight of the total expense.

  • Personally I really need to not jump at the chance to spend for anything. And, if I am being honest, put my money away right away at the beginning of every paycheck so I don’t even realize it’s there.
