How to Travel to Antarctica from India

Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on the planet. It covers millions of square miles of ice and is one of the most inaccessible places on Earth. Once upon a time, it was among the world’s greatest mysteries, a place that invited rugged plans and adventurous voyages. However, with the advancement of science, the continent has been preserved as a haven of peace and scientific research. Antarctica is uninhabited except for the native fauna and research bases set up there. The pristine icy landscapes synonymous with its name are majestic and intimidating; sites that you simply will not find on any other corner of the planet.

There has been a steady rise in interest in Antarctica for the last ten years, and Indian travelers account for this demand as well. Travelling to Antarctica from India might be a difficult or taxing journey, but it is one of the most beautiful experiences you could ever invest money in.  Given the environment and location of the continent, travelling there comes with its fair share of challenges. Going to Antarctica from India would not be a simple leisurely experience, as you will need to take several things into account, especially since the country does not have any direct route to the continent.

How to go to Antarctica from India

One of the best ways to go to Antarctica is to book a cruise. Ushuaia, located in Argentina, is considered to be the southernmost city in the world. It is dubbed as ‘The End of the World’. The city is one of the best spots to board a cruise to get to Antarctica.  You can reach Ushuaia by air from Buenos Aires. The latter is connected to all major cities in India. Buenos Aires is also a great destination where you could spend a few days before heading out to Ushuaia to catch your cruise.

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, boasts a great combination of architectural and cultural heritage. The vibrant arts scene and stunning views are a delight to the eyes.

Cruise ships sailing to Antarctica from Ushuaia visit all the popular tourist spots, offering ample time for visitors to explore the land and witness the beauty of sights such as Beagle Channel and the legendary Drake Passage. Crossing the Drake Passage is an unforgettable yet formidable experience because the lack of land nearby leads to very strong currents. The two oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific, collide to extend to the Southern Ocean.  The rough nature of the Drake Passage has given it the name ‘Sailor’s Everest’. This is one of the sections of the trip that will make you realize just how tense a journey to Antarctica from India could be. Once you reach Antarctica, you will be right at the heart of stunning icebergs, towering mountains, and endearing penguin colonies. Various places and sights will make your trip worthwhile.

South Shetland Islands

It is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the continent. It is home to some of the most beautiful fjords and glaciers. The area is almost completely covered with ice and snow.  They also boast of a variety of wildlife, including penguins, seals, and seabirds. The islands have been used for whaling and sealing activities as well as for Antarctic exploration bases. The Deception Island, famously used as a whaling station, is located here as well. It is technically the caldera of an active volcano.

Antarctic Sound

It is also known as the ‘Iceberg Alley’ due to massive tabular icebergs that can be seen within the body of water. They have broken into their present form from vast ice sheets, primarily due to the negative effects of climate change. It is also home to the largest Adélie penguin population and is frequented by whales. The huge icebergs and glaciated peaks will make you realize just how minuscule we are compared to the many other creations of nature.

Neko Harbour

Neko Harbour gives you the golden opportunity to witness glacier calving or iceberg calving. It refers to the phenomenon of ice chunks breaking off from the edge of glaciers and falling into the surrounding water. The thunderous roar and strong waves that accompany glacier caving are incredible. It is an experience that you will never forget.  The harbor was named after a Scottish whaling ship that worked in these waters at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a sight you should not miss while travelling to Antarctica from India.

Lemaire Channel

The channel is one of the most visited spots on the continent. It is an extremely steep channel, surrounded by peaks that are almost entirely vertical. It is a perfect spot to see Humpback Whales and seals. And it is arguably the most inhabitable place on the planet, one that is only visible when you are almost inside it. The marine life is found at its best in the Leisure Channel during Antarctic summers.

Antarctic Peninsula

Antarctica Peninsula is one of the most accessible parts of the continent and one that is included in almost every cruise’s itinerary. It is the northernmost part of the continent. It is home to magnificent glaciers, ice-strewn waterways, expansive skies, and a myriad of wildlife, including gentoo penguins and Weddell seals.  The peninsula offers a stunning view of glacier upon glacier pouring out of towering, icy mountains.

Best Time to Visit Antarctica

The most desirable time to visit Antarctica from India is between November to March. During this time, sunlight is abundant, and the ice melts away enough for ships to access different areas of the continent. The other months of the year feature endless nights and extremely low temperatures.

Due to the somewhat risky nature of a journey to Antarctica, it is advisable that you get comprehensive insurance before you travel. Make sure you take appropriate gear and clothing recommended by professionals. Trusted travel agencies take care of all these details with special regard to the safety of all involved. Travelling to Antarctica from India might be one of the most intimidating journeys you ever undertake. But if you make the right decisions, you can rest assured that it will be a trip like no other. Antarctica is quite literally the single most distinctive landscape found on the planet. It is safe to say you will return from the trip a changed person, with a renewed appreciation for the dynamic facets of nature.
