Travel and Tourism industry is an ever-volatile sector. With the enormous volume of mass movement and travel itineraries involved, the world of travel and tourism cannot remain constant. A good number of governments in the world depend heavily on tourism. To generate consistent income via tourism, these countries have to implement lucrative methods to attract tourists. Visa free entry or short-term visa waiver programs, entice tourists to visit such countries. Besides the growth prospect of travel and tourism sector, a few measures taken by immigration and airlines link to security of the countries. Sharing the key Travel and Tourism Updates 2024.

Major Visa Updates

South African and Botswana passport holders require visa to enter Ireland. Even those intended to travel through Ireland are required to obtain a transit visa. The rule has been in effect from July 2024.

With effect from July 2024, Romania, a Schengen country, allows visa-free entry to citizens of 88 countries.

Thailand erased visa requirements to 36 more countries in addition to the 57 that didn’t require a visa to enter the country. Meanwhile, another update from Thai Travel and Tourism sector informs the obliteration of visa-free entry for Middle Eastern countries starting December 2024.

Andorra, in its efforts to boost tourism, now permits visa-free entry to 63 countries like Schengen countries and non-EU counties like Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and many more.

Kazakh government now permits hundred countries to enter Kazakhstan with the new visa-free entry programme.

With the new visa policy, Trusted Tour Operator Scheme by South Africa, Indians can visit South Africa without a visa. It will be implemented in January 2025 and they hope to bolster their travel and tourism sector with the move. One of the significant Travel and Tourism updates 2024.

East African country of Tanzania now offers visa-free entry to 46 countries.

Laos has opened a visa waiver program to boost its tourism sector until December 2024.

Malaysia and Chinese governments have agreed to extend its visa exception for their citizens to visit the other country until the end of 2026.

A Sri Lankan passport holder can now travel 25 countries visa-free. And 35 more countries with an eVisa.

India rises to 82nd in the passport index and Indian passport holders can now visit 62 countries visa-free.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has introduced electronic visa system. The eligible nationals can now apply for a visa online.

To attract tourists, Pakistan has now waived the visa fee for 126 countries.

Being the strongest passport in the world, a Singapore national can visit as many as 195 countries visa-free.

Indonesian government has curtailed the long list of 169 countries that could visit Indonesia visa-free to a mere 13.

Since 2024, Chinese government has introduced visa-free entry scheme to China to a few countries. Norway being the latest entrant.

With effect from December 2024, EU countries will require an Electronic Travel Authorization to enter Thailand.

A Schengen visa outspreads its travel benefits beyond EU countries. With a valid Schengen visa, you can now visit 67 countries.

Introduction of cascade visa system is expected to benefit Indian travellers to the Schengen area. The system is beneficial to those who have legally used a short-stay visa twice within a span of three years. Such a traveller is eligible to apply for a two years multiple entry visa.

Come October 2024, New Zealand is almost tripling its tourist tax.

Digital Nomad Visa is soon going to be the fad in the travel and tourism industry. The status provides someone the legal right to work remotely while visiting and residing in another country. Nomadic lifestyle and use of technology to work makes you eligible for such a visa.

Airline updates

Qatar Airways Holidays provides stopover stay packages for residents of UAE, KSA, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. The package includes airport assistance, transfers, city tours and desert experiences.

To up the security, a few airports have made it mandatory to have flight ticket and boarding passes with QR code. Indeed one of the most important Travel and Tourism updates 2024.

EU Border Biometric System

Much anticipated EU’s new entry-exit system is still a work in progress. Talks of impending digital border system has been in the news for more than a couple of years now. The ambitious project that will require fingerprint and facial scans for non-EU travellers including Britons has been postponed until November.

With effect from September 2024, The European Commission will enforce restrictions on passengers carrying liquid containers exceeding 100ml in EU airports. The rule applies to the cabin baggage only.

UAE Driving License Benefits

With a valid UAE driving license, you can now drive a vehicle in most of EU countries, UK, Australia, in many of the African, Asian, South American and North American countries.

GCC Grand Tours

GCC Grand Tours visa is akin to the Schengen visa provided by EU countries. Planned to be launched by the end of 2024, GCC Grand Tours visa will simplify travelling across Gulf Cooperation Council. The proposed visa will be valid for 30 days. With such a visa, one can travel across UAE, Qatar, KSA, Oman, Bahrain and Oman.
