Given the centuries old Portuguese settlement in the state, prominent religious sites in Goa are worth visiting. Apparently, churches lead the list when it comes to prominent religious sites in Goa. Yet, ancient temples, mosques, and Gurdwaras adorn the spiritual vibe of the state. Hence, next time you plan a holiday in the state, do consider visiting these prominent religious sites in Goa.

Basilica Of Bom Jesus

For an inquisitive traveler, the Basilica of Bom Jesus becomes one of the prominent religious sites in Goa. Bom Jesus means infant Jesus and it is dedicated to infant Jesus. The 16th century edifice which is one of the oldest in the state and even in the country, is visited by thousands. And the principal reason? The mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier who died in 1552 in China is still well preserved in the church. Once in ten years, the mortal remains is on public display which is attended by thousands. Built in the finest Baroque architecture, the church is a UNESCO heritage site. Along with this style, distinctive Jesuit panache is added. Ornamental works, precious stones, and marble works make the interior of the church stand out. The serene ambiance of the church also becomes a center of cultural and musical events held in the state.

Se Cathedral

Another UNESCO-declared heritage site; the construction of Se Cathedral was completed in the 17th century. It is said that it took over 100 years to build the church whose architecture follows the Corinthian style. In fact, it is built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese on Goan shores. It is a frequently visited heritage site in Goa. The gigantic Golden Bell, mosaic work, fascinating carvings, and Iberian works amaze everyone. The baptismal font in the church was used by St. Francis Xavior. The church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. Its interior with Manueline style architecture emanates Portuguese grandeur. Other key points of attraction in the church complex are the Chapel of Cross of Miracles and the Blessed Sacrament. There is an archaeological museum attached to the church.

Our Lady of Immaculate Conception

A 78-step climb leading to the church and the white structure standing tall is one of the most popular spots in Goa. Visitors never miss the opportunity to click photos standing on these steps with the church in the backdrop. Located in Panjim, Our Lady of Immaculate Conception was built in 1540. Apparently a white edifice, the church is a fusion of Portuguese, baroque, and Goan architecture. The church has three alters dedicated respectively to Lady Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, and Jesus Crucified. Augustinian bell-carved pulpits, and marble statues of saints are other notable features. Also, the panoramic view of the city from the church premises is alluring. On 8th December, the church celebrates the main feast day attracting thousands of faithful. The prayer services are done in Konkani, English, and Portuguese languages on different days.

Shree Mangueshi Temple

Situated at MangueshiVillage in Goa, the name of the temple is associated with the village which in turn is believed to be originated from a myth. There are many legends surrounding the existence of the temple. The chief deity to whom the temple is dedicated is Lord Mangueshi, a form of Lord Siva. A temple dedicated to Lord Mangueshi cannot be found anywhere else. Initially, the temple was built in the 1500s. However, it had to undergo several reconstruction processes due to Portuguese occupancy back then. The elegant temple is built in Goan Hindu style architecture with a mix of Christian and Muslim influences.

A seven-storey octagonal lamp tower which is supposed to be the tallest of the kind in Goa is a prime attraction. Apart from that chandelier, water tank, spacious courtyard, canteen, and accommodation facility are other notable features here. The annual feast in January is a mega event. A procession of presiding deity in a palanquin can be witnessed.

Mahadeva Temple

A 12th-century architectural wonder dedicated to Lord Siva was built precisely to stand the test of time. Kadamba queen Kamladevi proposed to build the temple with intricate handwork that still attracts thousands. It is the oldest and only surviving temple from the Kadamba dynasty. Imagine a perfectly crafted ancient structure in grey-black basalt placed in the middle of a beautiful garden and a forest in the backdrop. Given its historical importance, the magnificent temple is declared as a protected historical monument. A pillared hall, a three-tiered tower in the inner sanctum, and reliefs of Lords Siva, Vishnu, and Brahma with their consorts are distinctive features here. There is also a linga, a symbol of Lord Shiva inside the inner sanctum. Mahashivratri is the main festival celebrated in the temple.

Safa Shahouri Masjid

Built by Ibrahim Adilshan of Bijapur in 1560, the Safa Shahouri masjid is the oldest mosque in Goa. Built in such an era implies it has had its share of witnessing several dynasty rulings in Goa and yet it has withstood it all. Goan influence on architecture is evident in its reticular shape construction. The absence of columns is a notable element. The raised courtyard around is dotted with miniature pillars. The use of Persian arches, a Charbagh-style garden, adjacent picturesque water tank are other key features. The two major festivals are Id-Ul-Fitr and Id-Ul-Zuha.

Betim Gurudwara

For those of you curious enough to visit a Gurdwara in Goa, Shri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara is the most famous Sikh pilgrimage site in Goa. In the north of Goa, it is situated in Betim village. Like in most Gurudwara, you will find the Langar Hall here for Guru Ka Langar which is the free food. The complex also has limited accommodation facilities. The birth anniversary of Saheb Shri Guru Nanak Dev is celebrated with great zeal.
