6 Beautiful Snow Places in India to visit during Winter

Summers are almost at our doorsteps in my place in India. The tinge of spring is still on, so at least there is some amount of relief in the air. I have started missing the winters, the cooling effect and the cuddling inside the blankets. My woollens are washed and packed inside. This is the time when I feel like halting the seasonal phenomenon in the Earth to bring back the winters. I know I cannot. That’s the reason I thought of embarking upon a short virtual tour to 6 beautiful snow places in India.

These places are perfect for you to experience the snowfall and feel the wintery chills within yourself. Among them, I had the privilege to visit a few during the winters and indulge in the white snowy breathtaking landscape. While some of them are written based on the experiences shared by my parents and friends. Here are some of the beautiful and incredible snow places in India.

Rohtang Pass – Himachal Pradesh

Though I should have been ideally starting the list with Kashmir, then I could not control by biased selection. My trip to Shimla, Manali and Rohtang Pass is still my favourite and memorable trip in India among multiple travel destinations visited. In Winters, Rohtang Pass is considered to be one of the astonishing snow places in India. Travelling through the high curved Himalayan mountain trails is an experience to remember for years. The view of the majestic Himalayan mountains opening up in front of my eyes was such an astonishing feeling. The sheets of ice layer spread through the entire mountain stretch and the gorgeous valleys soothed my eyes. Definitely worth a visit multiple times to engulf into this spectacular natural beauty.

Tsomgo or Changu Lake – Sikkim

Tsomgo or Changu as it is known by different names is one of the spectacular snow places in India. It is termed the glacial lake, situated amid the gigantic Himalayan ranges heavily snow-capped during the winters. Yes, it’s true you might not be allowed to travel much higher up the mountains because of the slippery grounds, but you can view the beautiful lake surrounded by snow all over. The lake waters dazzle with the reflections of the snowy mountain ranges, creating a unique experience. The memories of visiting Changu lake is still afresh in my memory. A serene and tranquil place, surrounding oneself in an environment of solitude and peace.

Enroute to the Mystic Changu Lake

Nainital – Uttarakhand

One of the attractive snow places in India to visit during the winters. And I was lucky enough to visit Nainital, the land of nine lakes surrounded by the incredible Himalayan mountains. This spectacular hill station experiences snowfall almost every year. People often compare the place with the famous Lake District of London. If you love snowfall and the wintery cold, you will enjoy the alluring nature of the air encapsulating this magnificent place. Nature is at its best with the greenish tinges of the trees peeking in between the snow-capped mountain peaks and thick layered forests. You can feel the freshness in the air, refreshing your mind and soul.

Ladakh

If you are craving to experience a complete snow-covered region, Ladakh is the best option for you. It is one of the fascinating snow places in India, covered with layers of ice and frozen lakes. Adventure enthusiasts can opt for a snow trek braving the odds of nature. Chadar Trek is the most popular one during the winters. You can participate and enjoy winter festivals too. The freezing Zanskar lake enhances the beauty of the region with its frozen landscape. A unique feature about Ladakh is it’s known as the coldest desert where a person can get a sunburnt and frozen bite at the same time.

Sonamarg – Kashmir

Sonamarg in Kashmir is a paradise on Earth, which remains covered completely with snow during the winters. Encompassed by the Machoi and the Kolhoi majestic Himalayan glaciers, the place is one of the stunning snow places in India. The serenity of the lakes and the snow-laden awestruck scenic views allure tourists from all over the world. To experience this breathtaking beauty, you need to avoid the times of heavy snowfall and ensure the roads are accessible when you visit. You can opt for skiing, create a snowman, an igloo for a joyous experience. An incredible place to spend a relaxing and soothing time with family and friends.

Auli – Uttarakhand

Auli is unique and best in many ways. It is one of the gorgeous snow places in India with astounding skiing arenas. It is considered to be one of the wonderlands of India during the winters. The snow encapsulated Garhwal Himalayan ranges are mesmerizing and a treat to the eyes. If you love winter sports specifically skiing, then you must visit the place. The steep mountain slopes covered with layers of snow have aided in creating a number of ski resorts in the area. The beauty of the place is unparalleled during the winters; sure to create a memorable experience.

There are many more fabulous snow places in India – Munsiyari, Chopta, Khajjiar, Dhanaulti etc. Those are all in my bucket list and once I visit them will surely share my experience.
