The story unwraps in the 19^th century Chili. Young Rosa is a housemaid at German settler Stefan's house. An unexplainable occurrence leaves all of Stefan's sheep dead. Stefan assumes that the indigenous people are casting a spell over the settlers and therefore he lets out his dogs to attack Rosa's father and kills him. The girl is hurt and angered and seeks help from Mateo as suggested by a church priest. With him, she discovers a new world and he promises her to avenge her father's death.
