Exciting Winter Destinations in Central Europe

Colorful decorations, vibrant Christmas markets, year-end vibes, and the cold…Europe has already embraced winter. Winter destinations in Central Europe are adorned in an aura of festive mood. Every stroll through the charmingly dim-lit alleys prods you to probe more. How about spending an exciting holiday in a few of these winter destinations in Central Europe?

When one thinks of a trip to Europe in winter, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Munich, or Hamburg can top the priority list. Nonetheless, here is a list that is different and equally exciting.

Hallstatt, Austria

Can you imagine a lakeside town surrounded by gigantic mountains and baroque architecture entirely clad in snow? The surreal location gives ample reason to choose Hallstatt as one of the winter destinations in Central Europe. By merely taking a stroll through the streets you can best enjoy your time in Hallstatt. The charming fairytale village of Austria throws post-card perfect viewpoints during winter. Marveling at Marktplatz’s giant Xmas tree, views from the Hallstatt Skywalk, and a ride up the mountain on the Salzbergbahn funicular are a few engaging cavities. Evangelische Pfarrkirche and Welterbemuseum Hallstatt are other popular spots. The city is home to the world’s first salt mine. Tours of the Hallstatt Salt Mine or Altaussee Salt Mine through its tunnels of pure rock salt can be memorable too. The anticipation can hit a different level when you visit the 12th-century Bone House at St Michael’s Church where a collection of around 1200 human skulls is displayed. Winter sports in the town are highly sought after. Skiing, hiking, and snowboarding top the list. When the average temperature hovers around -6°C the Hallstatt Christmas market becomes the perfect icing on the cake.

Transylvania, Romania

Blanketed in white snow the medieval castles and Saxon cities of Transylvania make it one of the exciting winter destinations in central Europe. An eerie feeling can castle you when the temperature drops below -5°C. No wonder the region of Transylvania inspired the movie Dracula. Remember Vlad? Like in a scary tale, the sleepy city, frozen and snow-clad, welcomes you to be its guest. Spooky drama apart, the enchanting location is apt for unwinding in winter sports admiring the frozen nature, or for a relaxed city walk. Try the cable car up the mountain to Balea Lake or visit the Liberty Bear Sanctuary and the UNESCO city of Sighisoara, the birthplace of the infamous Vlad the Impaler. Indulging in Romanian delicacies like mamaliga, buttery polenta and papanasi, sarmale, and local wine can be a great experience.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Picture perfect, that’s how Lake Bled appears in winter. The frozen Lake Bled and the adjacent 12th century Bled Castle with the Julian Alps in the background frame a spectacular sight. Bled Castle is the top attraction at Lake Bled. Inside Castle Bled, there is a restaurant, a blacksmith’s shop, a wine cellar, printing works, and a museum. Not every winter is freezing enough to turn the lake into a frozen bed. Depending on it one can row or skate to the tiny island in the middle of the lake and a church therein. Wellness centers, spas, and excursion spots add value to the tourism in town. Winter sports like skating discos, skating, ice hockey, curling and ice bowls are other activities here. One of the most popular winter things to do at Bled is snowshoeing.

Lipno nad Vltavou, Czechi

Another lakeside town that is an ideal winter destination in central Europe is Lipno nad Vltavou. When the winter temperature drops below zero, the town adorns a whole new outlook to welcome visitors. Situated along Lipno Lake, the town attracts several thousands of winter sports enthusiasts from the world over. Treetop trail, ice skating, sledding, cross-country skiing, skiing on the Lipno lake, and many more activities keep you occupied. Discovering the beautiful surroundings and going on an Alpine adventure can be exciting. Snowpark Lipno Lyžařsky areál on the mountain top has 13.5 kilometres of ski slope. 16th century Churches of St. Philip and James by the Lipno Lake are other spots of interest in the area.

Lillafüred, Hungary

Located in the Bükk mountains, the Eastern Hungary town Lillafüred ticks several boxes in your list of exciting winter destinations in central Europe. With a minimum temperature of around -5°C, the location is a paradise for all types of winter tourists. Diósgyőr Castle, a holiday resort built in the 1800s by the side of the Garadna Hamori Lake paved the way for the flow of tourists. The lake itself is a spot of great many activities. Anna Cave, a limestone cave from 1833, is partially open to the public. So is the adjacent St. Stephen Cave. Szinva Falls which turns to icicles during winter is an amazing sight in the area. The Chairlift Cable Car takes you up the mountains, 1080 meters above sea level. Forrest train of Lillafüred allows a scenic journey through the heart of nature.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

A winter beauty with a lot of sunshine is Dubrovnik. Less crowded and rarely subzero temperatures in the winter allow visitors to explore the Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Are you a GOT fan? Winter unravels the magical beauty of Game of Thrones filming locations in Dubrovnik. Be a part of St. Blaise Day in February, the feast day of the patron of the city that is listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The city walls of Dubrovnik standing tall at 24m high and 6m thick give a birds-eye view of the entire town. The city still bears proof of its turbulent, historical past. Walking around, you can be astonished by this medieval city. Christmas lights and decorations hit the peak during the Dubrovnik Winter Festival. Concerts, workshops, art exhibits, theatre plays, and light shows fill the atmosphere. Kolenda, a unique Dubrovnik custom from the 13th century can be witnessed in winter. And finally, don’t miss the Dubrovnik Carnival.
