For a young woman like Míša to be living in a stuffy atmosphere with her in-laws, it becomes unbearable for her. Soon, alcohol becomes her sole source of solace. Although she has the desire to detach herself from the destructible habit, she fails to do so time and time again. As a wife, mother, and daughter-in-law, she has to take a decision that strains her self-esteem. She finally stands up to face the demon within head on to come clean.

The story revolves around the bond of two brothers, Zihan and Zijie. Surprisingly, what stands between them is the objection by their mother, Ai Lin,g who is a nightclub singer. Hence, she deliberately keeps away from her elder son and makes sure Zihan follows the same rule. Between Ai Ling and Zihan, there is an ideal mother-son relationship. In her attempt to keep her elder son away, Ai Ling publicises that Zihan is studying abroad. She also makes sure that he is living in isolation upon the release from the police custody. However, he has different plans. Zihan and Zijie meet up, and they do it often, defying their mother. Fencing becomes the medium to kindle the bond between the two. Zijie knows how good his elder brother is at fencing. Zihan trains his younger brother to be good enough to get selected for the school team. Another fatal accident occurs while they are training, and the plot is not without surprises.

Set in Copenhagen in 1919 in monochrome, the opening scene of the movie projects the sorry state of Karoline. She is a seamstress. She has not heard from her husband, Peter, for a long time and she doesn’t even know if he is alive. Hence, she is ineligible for a widow pension. However, her boss Jørgen promises to help her look for her husband. Gradually their bond blossoms. meanwhile, they get the news of the end of the war in Europe. Also, Peter makes his appearance, albeit badly mutilated in the war. Upon seeing him, Karoline finds it difficult to accept him back. And she tells him, she has met someone and she is pregnant and pushes him away from her life. Jørgen agrees to marry her but his mother forbids their marriage. She even loses her job at the factory. Without any support and a future being bleak, she attempts an abortion but is timely prevented by a woman called Dagmar. A while later, Karoline returns to her to hand over her baby and Dagmar remembers her as the girl with the needle. Since she doesn’t have enough money to pay Dagmar, she offers to work for her as a wet nurse. The rest of the story uncovers the shoddy side of Dagmar as discovered by Karoline. In the closing scene, Karoline adopts Dagmar’s daughter.
