Serampore College –

Serampore College tops the list of Oldest Universities in India established back in the 18th century in the year 1818. Three missionaries – William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward established this university with the objective of opening the college for all the students irrespective of their castes and cultural backgrounds with an aim of educating youth about Christian culture.  This College has acquired the status as an institution bestowing guidance in different disciplines such as Christian Theology and Human Sciences, Science, and Commerce.

University of Mumbai – Maharashtra

University of Mumbai established in the year 1857 had its first campus in South Mumbai “The Fruit of Learning is Character and Righteous Conduct” as its mission. It was one of the first oldest universities in India founded in a state. Dr. Bhau Daji Lad John Wilson Jugonnath Sunkersett is the founder of the University of Mumbai formerly known as the University of Bombay. The University of Mumbai offers courses in the field of Arts, Commerce, science and technology, Fine Arts, Law, Music, Theatre/ Folk Art, Dance, and principles of research such as Doctorate and MPhil. It was established with the mission and vision of imparting quality education to students.

University of Calcutta – West Bengal

The University of Calcutta was founded back in 1857. In the first instance, this university was designed following the pattern of the University of London. It was established by Alexander Duff, Sir Charles Wood, Maharaja Maheshwar Singh Bahadur, and Dr. Fredrick John. The academic department and centers include Agriculture, Arts, Commerce, Social Welfare, business management, Journalism, library science, engineering, technology, fine arts, music, home science, and law.

This college has had a few eminent personalities including Rabindranath Tagore, C.V Raman, and Amartya Sen. It was Asia's most memorable foundation to be laid out as a multidisciplinary and secular Western-style college.

University of Madras – Tamil Nadu

The University of Madras belongs to the trio of the oldest universities in India born in 1857. It is one of the most prestigious universities in India. It was established by the efforts of Mr. George Norton and Lord Elphinstone. The University is significantly known for its national centers for advanced research in nanotechnology, photonics, and neurotoxicity. It offers around 230 courses covering different fields like social sciences, humanities, science management, and medicine. It was established with its objective of “Learning Promotes Natural Talent”.

Aligarh Muslim University – Uttar Pradesh

Aligarh Muslim University was formally established in the year 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College. It gained its current name in 1920. In the year, 2011 Aligarh Muslim University spread to other Indian states when it laid out its MBA and coordinated Law centers in Kerala and West Bengal. It offers around 300 degrees offering courses in a large number of specialized, professional, and interdisciplinary subjects.

Panjab University – Chandigarh

Panjab University was first settled in Lahore in 1882. However, it was moved to the Indian locale of Chandigarh in 1947 and was founded by the British Colonial authorities. It is one of the oldest universities in India and is a critical piece of India's social legacy in light of how it was affected during the partition. With its objective “Lead us into the Light from Darkness”, the University has attempted to spread education and learning across India. The University is spread over the eight regions of Punjab state. It has 78 working divisions offering courses specialized in technology, arts, and commerce fields.

University of Allahabad – Uttar Pradesh

Laid out in the year 1887, the University of Allahabad was once popular as the “Oxford of the East” and its motto is “As Many Branches So Many Trees”. The University has 5 areas of education as Science, management, arts, law, and commerce. Being a Public University, it draws in students from every one of the Indian states as well as across the world. It is known for its cultural climate and environment. It was laid out under the aegis of Sir William Muir, the Lt. Legislative head of the United Provinces; the building was structured by Sir William Emerson.

Banaras Hindu University – Varanasi

Banaras Hindu University laid out in 1916 was before known as Central Hindu College. It was helped to establish by the Maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sunder Lal, and Annie Besant. It's quite possibly one of the oldest universities in India with the biggest residential space with its objective “Knowledge imparts immorality”. It is spread across 140 divisions, 6 grounds, and 14 resources. And work in various different fields including arts, commerce, agriculture, management, and sciences.

University of Mysore

The University of Mysore is perhaps the youngest in the list of 10 oldest universities in India. It was established in the year 1916 under the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore. The aphorism of the school is taken from the Bhagavad Gita and is interpreted as “Nothing compares with Knowledge”. It was the main University to be granted a five-star position by the NAAC in 2000. The undergrad and postgraduate courses presented by the college are connected with Commerce. The board and IT fields focus on giving both hypothetical and viable abilities to its students.

    So happy to see my college on top. I am from Serampore College. The general college started in 1818 while the foundation dates back to 1805 when Sir William Carrey started the Theology College with only 5-6 students
