New Year Movies – Notable Indian movies 2024

In a few days’ time, year 2025 is upon us. How did the year 2024 treat you? Happy, sad, mixed feelings…a lot must have happened in the last eleven months. For those of you, looking forward to ending the year on a pleasant note, here is a recap of some of the notable Indian movies 2024. What are your year-end plans? Among all the festive activities, watching a few new year movies can be exciting too. There have been umpteen Indian movies released in different languages in 2024. Despite the sheer number of outstanding movies, I have culled out a few movies based on IMDb rating and stimulating screenplay. Thus, here is a list of notable new year movies 2024.

Notable Tamil movies

Despite the release of a few big budget movies in Tamil, they failed to move the audience as expected. However, a few other movies were notable and are good potions in the new year movies list.

The soothing story of Meiyazhagan takes you along the journey of Arulmozhi Varman with Meiyazhagan in the enchanting Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

Dhanush starrer Raayan is a crime thriller. A family is ripped apart by felonious acts and deceit and Raayan should avenge the adversaries.

A suspense thriller, Maharaja has an enthralling plot. Character played by Vijay Sethupathi, is adamant on getting back “Lakshmi” after an unfortunate incident at his home.

A sports, family drama that is intertwined with a love affair is Lubber Pandhu. Fierce aggression on the cricket field between two opposite players has an off the field family impact. 

Notable Telugu movies

Among several big-budget top Indian movies, a few were released in Telugu language this year.

Multi starrer Kalki 2898 AD is based on Hindu Mythology set in the post-apocalyptic era in 2898 AD. The epic good vs evil war movie is an action thriller, science fiction.

One of the most awaited top Indian movies this year was Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2. In this crime drama sequel to part 1, Bhanwar’s rivalry continues on against his nemesis sandalwood don, Pushpa Raj.

Come Saturday and a vigilante is in action against exploitation in the society. In Saripodhaa Sanivaaram Surya has reasons to suppress his anger until Saturday to fight the evil.

Story of Lucky Baskhar begins in 1989. An ordinary bank employee with debts aplenty takes an extreme step to save himself and his family from being blanked by poverty. Thus, with an intelligently masked truth, Baskhar runs the show.

Notable Malayalam movies

There were a good number of outstanding Malayalam movies released in 2024. Many are good enough to be listed in the new year movies list.

Much like its unfamlier title, Kishkindha Kaandam, surreallypresents an apt location and an intriguing topic. It revolves around Appu Pillai’s amnesia and how he and  his family deals with it.

Based on a true incident, Manjummel Boys is athriller movie. A Kodaikanal trip of a group of friends becomes an intense rescue mission when one of them is trapped deep down in a pothole.

Etched in folklore, mythology and elements of horror, the absorbing tale of Kodumon Potti in Bramayugam is a chilling monochrome experience.

An enthralling action, comedy, Aavesham is about a Bangalore based goon, Ranga. His connection with three college students and the subsequent happenings summarize the story.

Premalu is a romantic, comedy movie. The jolly good love story involves Sachin, Amal, Aadhi, Reenu and Karthika. But who loves whom?

Notable Kannada movies

Here is an amazing list of top-notch Kannada movies released in 2024.

Bhairathi Ranagal’s growth from naught to a noted legal advisor, and later following criminal ways to fight for justice is the thread of the story.

Laughing Buddha speaks about the life of a police constable, Govardhan. He is obese yet enjoys his life and eats whatever he likes. The humour-packed film sheds light on personal and professional lives of ordinary police officers.

Ibbani Tabbida Ileyali is a romantic story involving Siddharth and Radha whom he is to marry. However, his nonchalance in a firm decision lies in his past love for Anahita whom he loved from college days.

Notable Hindi movies

Although the super heroes of Bollywood, didn’t have any top movies to show off, a few other Hindi movies were well received by the audience. They take prime spot in the new year movies list.

Laapataa Ladies was selected as the Indian entry for the 97^th Academy Awards. The family drama revolves around two newly wedded couples. The story becomes comically exciting and thought-provoking when one of the brides is lost on the train while the other is wrongly taken by a groom.

In the biographical film, Maidaan, life of a noteworthy football coach, Syed Abdul Rahim is portrayed. Set in 1952, the struggles and sacrifices, he has to make to form a successful football team in India comes alive in this sports drama.

Dedicated to all firefighters, the movie Agni portrays the challenges and struggles of firefighters and yet how they are overlooked. The two key characters, Parel Fire station chief, Vitthal and police officer Samit, juggle the story forward.

One of the rare, thrilling action-packed movies of 2024 is Kill. When a gang of criminals attacks and loots passengers on a train, two Indian soldiers on board swing into action. One of the passengers is the girlfriend of a soldier. It is a war of two vs many on a running train.

Inspired by the life of popular Punjabi musician, Amar Singh Chamkila, the movie sheds light on the legendry singer. An opportunity to perform on a stage by Amar Singh was well received by the audience and he was nicknamed by the name Chamkila. He quickly rose to stardom until his assassination.

Certainly, the list of New Year Movies is inexhaustible given the number of languages and movies released in India. Amaran, Suchana, Sookshma Darshini, Shalivahana Shake, Article 370 and Juna Furniture are worth-watching too. You are always welcome to suggest more to the list.
